Mountain Walk

Moel Siabod

Moel Siabod in the snow

Name : Moel Siabod Meaning : Barren Hill Height : 2861 ft / 872 m
Starting Point : About a mile south-east of the village of Capel Curig - by Pont Cyfyng, GR 734572 or in a lay-by on the A5, GR 735571.
Distance : 6 miles Ascent : 2369 ft / 722 m Estimated Time : 3 - 5 hours

Route : From the A5, cross Pont Cyfyng. Ignore the public footpath on the right. Take the next turning on the right, a tarmac road which climbs steeply through trees. This road actually goes all the way to the north-east ridge of Moel Siabod but a diversion has been created at the first bend to avoid a farmyard. Having rejoined the road, above the farmyard, turn left and go through a gate.Further on a second gate is reached. As you approach the mountain, the ground levels out and immediately before reaching a third gate leave the road and cross rough ground on the right to reach a conspicuous stile over the fence below the mountain ridge. Follow this long ridge to the summit. The level summit ridge turns out to be long and rocky. The rocks can be awkward in places and some may prefer to take an easier route - though it is much less fun - along a narrow path through short grass a little below the rocky ridge on the north side of the mountain. The actual summit is at the far end of the ridge and is marked by a triangulation point. There is a stone shelter nearby.

Remember : Always take a map and compass with you.
