Ganwyd a magwyd Iolo Williams yng Ngogledd Cymru, ac mae diddordeb mawr mewn adar wedi bod ganddo ers erioed. Gynt yn Swyddog Rhywogaeth dros Gymru i'r Gymdeithas Frenhinol er Gwarchod Adar, fo oedd testun y gyfres BBC 'Birdman', ac mae nawr yn cyflwyno'r rhaglen S4C digidol 'Byd Natur'. Carem ddiolch iddo am gyfrannu'r erthygl canlynol.

North Wales is one of the best bird-watching areas in the whole of Wales with its mixture of habitats, from islands to the high peaks. Here, we give you no more than a taste of some of the best sites. There are dozens of others worth visiting, and you need to spend years in the area to get to know it properly.

1. South Stack Reserve near Holyhead, Isle of Anglesey. This is a RSPB reserve sitting on top of steep cliffs. Here, hundreds of sea birds such as razorbills, guillemots and puffins nest, as well as choughs and the peregrine falcon. Best time - April to July.

2. Cemlyn near Amlwch. Isle of Anglesey. A reserve of the North Wales Wildlife Trust notable for its terns, including the sandwich tern, the roseate tern and the arctic tern. Best time - May to July.

3. The Dee Estuary. One of the best sites in Britain for bird-watching with over a 100,000 waders and ducks visiting the estuary every winter. Birds such as the pintail duck, the wigeon and the teal can be seen here in their thousands, as well as the dunlin, the redshank, the curlew and oyster catchers. It is also an excellent place to spot rare birds. Best time - the Winter.

4. The Aber Valley, near Bangor. A beautiful valley enclosed by the mountains of Snowdonia, it is a good site to see woodland birds such as the pied flycatcher, the redstart and the wood warbler, as well as mountain birds such as ravens, buzzards and choughs. At times it is possible to spot other birds of prey here such as the sparrowhawk, the kestrel and the peregrine falcon. Best time - April to August.

5. Porthmadog. The cob is famous for its birds such as wigeons, curlews, and the rare grebe. At times the merlin can be seen hunting here in the Winter and a flock of whooper swans overwinters nearby. Best time - Winter.

6. The Migneint, on the back road between Ysbyty Ifan and Ffestiniog. This moorland has lost many of its special birds but you can see the red grouse, the wheatear and the skylark on the high ground. Some pairs of curlews and snipes still nest here, and if you're lucky you may see the short-eared owl at dusk.

7. Aberdysynni near Tywyn. An excellent site for watching sea-birds such as the red-throated diver, the eider duck and the common scoter, and on the nearby Broadwater the bar-tailed godwit and the little grebe can often be seen.

8. Ynys-hir near Machynlleth. Once again, this is a RSPB reserve, and it is teeming with birds throughout the year. In the Summer, visitors such as the pied flycatcher and the redstart join the lesser spotted woodpecker in the woods, and in the Winter white-fronted geese flock to the estuary. Also at this time, birds of prey such as the hen harrier and red kite can be seen hunting over the estuary.

These are some of my favourite places, but there are plenty of others to be had, as long as you keep your eyes open and expect the unexpected!

Gogledd Cymru ydi un o'r ardaloedd adarydda gorau yng Nghymru gyfan gyda'i gymysgedd o gynefinoedd, o'r ynysoedd i'r copaon uchel. Yma, rydym yn rhoi dim mwy na blas ichi ar rhai o'r safleoedd gorau. Mae dwsinau o rai eraill sy'n werth ymweld â nhw, ac mae gofyn treulio blynyddoedd yn yr ardal cyn dod i 'nabod y lle yn iawn.

1. Gwarchodfa Ynys Lawd ger Caergybi, Ynys Môn. Gwarchodfa'r RSPB ydi hon yn eistedd ar ben glogwyni serth. Yma, mae cannoedd o adar môr fel llurs, gwylogod a phalod yn nythu, yn ogystal â brain coesgoch a'r hebog tramor. Amser gorau - Ebrill i Orffennaf.

2. Cemlyn ger Amlwch, Ynys Môn. Gwarchodfa Ymddiriedolaeth Gwarchod Natur Gogledd Cymru sy'n nodweddiadol am ei morwennoliaid, yn cynnwys y forwennol bigddu, y forwennol wridog a morwennol y gogledd. Amser gorau - Mai i Orffennaf.

3. Aber Afon Dyfrdwy. Un o'r safleoedd gorau ym Mhrydain i wylio adar gyda dros 100,000 o rydyddion a hwyaid yn ymweld â'r aber pob gaeaf. Mae adar fel yr hwyaden lostfain, y chwiwell a'r gorhwyaden i'w gweld yma yn eu miloedd, yn ogystal â phibydd y mawn, y pibydd goesgoch, y gylfinir a phiod y môr. Mae'n le gwych hefyd i weld adar prin. Amser gorau - y Gaeaf.

4. Dyffryn Aber, ger Bangor. Dyffryn hardd sy'n gorwedd yng nghesail mynyddoedd Eryri, mae'n safle gwych i weld adar y coed fel y gwibedog brith, y tingoch a thelor y coed a hefyd adar y mynydd fel y gigfran, bwncathod a'r fran goesgoch. Gellir, ar adegau, weld adar ysglyfaethus eraill yma fel y gwalch glas, y cudyll coch a'r hebog tramor. Amser gorau - Ebrill i Awst.

5. Porthmadog. Mae'r cob yn enwog am ei adar fel chwiwell, gylfinir, a'r gwyachod prin. Ar adegau mae'r gwalch bach i'w weld yn hela yma yn y gaeaf a mae haid o elyrch y gogledd yn gaeafu gerllaw. Amser gorau - Gaeaf.

6. Y Migneint, ar y ffordd gefn rhwng Ysbyty Ifan a Ffestiniog. Mae'r rhosdir yma wedi colli llawer o'i adar arbennig ond gallwch weld y grugiar, tinwen y garn a'r ehedydd ar yr ucheldir. Mae rhai parau o gylfinir a giach yn dal i nythu yma, ac os ydych yn lwcus, fe allech weld y dylluan glustog fin nos.

7. Aberdysynni ger Tywyn. Safle godidog i wylio adar y môr fel y trochydd yddfgoch, yr hwyaden fwythblu a'r for-hwyaden ddu ac ar y Broadwater gerllaw mae'r rhostog gynffonfraith a'r gwyach bach i'w gweld yn gyson.

8. Ynys-hir ger Machynlleth. Unwaith eto, gwarchodfa'r RSPB ydi hon ond mae'n byrlymu o adar drwy'r flwyddyn. Yn yr haf, bydd ymwelwyr fel y gwibedog brith a'r tingoch yn ymuno â'r gnocell leiaf yn y coed, ac yn y gaeaf, mae'r wydd dalcen wen yn heidio i'r aber. Yr amser yma hefyd, gwelir adar ysglyfaethus fel y bod tinwen a'r barcud coch yn hela dros yr aber.

Dyma rhai o'n hoff lefydd i, ond mae digonedd o rai eraill ar gael, dim ond i chi gadw'ch llygaid ar agor drwy'r amser a disgwyl yr annisgwyl!
